Tips For A Successful Lawn Next Year

042

Did you know you can impact the way your lawn will look for next year this month! Now, more than any other time of year, you can prepare and improve your lawn using proper lawn care techniques . With the chilly evenings and  hopefully sunny weekends, most people tend to lose their enthusiasm for lawn care this month.  If however, you can bring yourself to spend a few hours outside, it’s a guarantee you’ll be miles ahead of your neighbors for next year’s beautiful blooms!

3 Ways to get your lawn looking great next spring:

  1. Rake your leaves! We know raking and cleaning up leaves is no one’s favorite task.  It’s important however, to remove fallen leaves from your lawn as they begin to pile up.  Leaves do not need to be removed as soon as they start falling from the trees.  It is more efficient to wait until your lawn has started is completely covered.  It is best to remove leaves before a hard rain to alleviate heavy, wet leaves.  If leaves are left piled on your lawn for a long period of time, your lawn will lack the necessary sunlight to keep it healthy.  Leaves left untouched may also promote fungal disease and leave unsightly blemishes the following spring.big_pile_of_leaves-209x300
  2. Aerate your lawn!  Aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of soil and thatch from your lawn.  Core aeration helps promote air circulation in the soil, helps to reduce thatch build up and helps reduce soil compaction in our heavy clay soils.  Fall is a great time to aerate because the soil is moist, allowing deep plugs to be taken from the soil and there is less chance to spread weed seeds throughout the yard.
  3. Fertilize your lawn! Use a slow release nitrogen fertilizer to help build a strong root system and promote growth next spring.  Fall brings ideal conditions for the development and growth of cool season grasses such as bluegrass and ryegrass.  Applying your final feeding to your lawn before the winter months helps prepare your grass for its winter hibernation and promotes lush, beautiful growth.  img-lawn-fertilization
