What are you doing for Arbor Day?

iStock_000010225078XSmallArbor Day is officially celebrated in Columbus, OH on the last Friday in April, which happens to fall on April 25th this year.  This unique holiday is a time for friends, families and organizations to come together to observe and appreciate nature.  Most notably, it is a holiday to reflect on the usefulness and importance of trees in our landscapes.

Arbor Day was introduced by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska.  He was a journalist who spread information on agriculture and had an eagerness to plant trees.  His ideas and enthusiasm for trees in the landscape quickly spread and in 1872, Nebraska officially recognized a day for planting trees in April.  As the years passed, many more states started to recognize their own “Tree Planting Day”.  Each state now has their own Arbor Day which is celebrated at different times depending on their location in the United States.

Morton saw the importance of trees and everyone should take a moment to observe the wonder of trees.  Not only do trees provide shade from the hot sun but they keep soil for eroding, act as wind breaks from cool breezes and provide material for building, writing and fuel.  Aesthetically, trees provide us with an array of flowers and bring life to a landscape.

This year, Buck & Sons Landscape Service is partnering with Creative Living in Columbus, OH.  We will be donating and planting a tree for Creative Living on their property at 1531 Perry St.  Creative Living helps provide housing and support to physically disabled individuals.  All residents share the commitment to build a self-sufficient, productive life that fulfills the potential of each individual.

elm_frontierWe have decided to plant an Ulmus ‘Frontier, which is a hybrid elm tree.  This particular elm tree may reach a height of 30-40’ and get anywhere from 15-30’ wide.  It has a medium-fast growth rate and has a wonderful burgundy color in the fall.  If you need help picking out a tree to plant or would like more details on how to be proactive this Arbor Day please give us a call at 614-876-2825.  We hope everyone has a wonderful and joyous Arbor Day!
