July Garden Tips

Summer is well on its way.  You would not believe it by the weather we’ve had in Columbus, Ohio but July marks the beginning of summer flowers, drought and insects.  Luckily for us, watering our flowers has not been a problem but Ohio weather could change at any moment.  Here are a few tips to keep your gardens healthy this month:

Pinch Your Flowers005

Your perennials and flowers like a little dead heading.  Cut off spent flowers to increase more flower production as well as to help increase the size of your plant.  Pinch off the flowers of coleus, dahlia, snapdragon and other annuals to help keep compact, bushy and beautiful plants.

Check for Unwanted Growth

As the season progresses you may find unwanted perennial seedlings in your beds.  Although some of these seedlings can be viable plants, you may not want to overcrowd your existing bed.  This can cause your plants to outcompete with each other for nutrients and water.  Make sure to remove these plants or transplant as necessary.  Plants such as black-eyed-susan, joe-pye weed, and russian sage are notorious for self seeding and spreading in your beds.

Drought!!!

Inspect the soil around your plants and in your lawn throughout the summer for moisture.  Lawns require 1” of water per week.  Most established plants may only need water once per week but new plantings may need water every other day with no rain.  A rain gauge is an easy way to measure rainfall.  The easiest way to see if your plants need water is to check the soil with your finger.  If the soil is dry, your plants need water. 022

Inspect Your Plants and Lawn

The only way to know if you plants are having an issue is to go out and take a look.  Examine your plants.  Check for insect damage.  Check for disease issues.  If you do suspect a problem, call your local landscape expert for advice.  Go outside and enjoy your great outdoors!
